Stretchmarks (or striae as they are referred to in dermatological terms) develop when your skin is stretched suddenly : More accurately, the skin’s second layer is torn rather than stretched. The most common areas for stretch marks to develop are the stomach, breasts, thighs and hips. Both Genders can suffer from stretch marks and they affect a lot of adults. Luckily, they pose no health risks and only blemish the skin. However, these concerns grow in the warmer seasons as the amount of our bodies we show, increases.

How do stretchmarks occur?

This Stretching happens when the body grows at a high rate so that the skin can’t stretch quick enough to keep up with it. Stretch marks are commonly associated with pregnancy but can develop during puberty: Body building and rapid weight gain can also result in stretch marks.

Although the skin is usually fairly elastic , when it stretches, the normal production of collagen is disrupted. we need collagen to keep the skin firm and elastic. There are other factors which affect the ability of the skin to produce and maintain collagen levels such as diet or smoking It is the level of collagen in the skin which affect the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines. They also influence how other blemishes, such as acne scars or even surgery scars, heal.

What do stretch marks look like?

When initially formed, stretch marks appear as reddish purple lines. They are indented and have a different texture to the rest of the skin. Over time, the red and purple colour goes away, turning lighter and less noticeable. However they very rarely heal on their own.

Stretch mark removal can be done in several different ways. Stretch mark treatments vary dramatically in cost and effectiveness, treatments range from creams purchased over the counter to expensive surgical procedures For most, stretch marks are undesirable and can make people feel very self conscious, but this can be overcome or eliminated by treatment to remove stretch marks.

one method to treat stretch marks is by applying stretch mark creams to the affected area however, only a minor percentage of cream is absorbed into the skin therfore, creams are not really the best treatment for stretch marks. However, using creams with techniques such as skin needling, allows a much higher percentage of cream absorbed by the skin so this method often proves the most reliable method for many individuals.
